Creative Block is a weekly newsletter that gives you a glimpse into my life, creativity, design, and music. It's like a little pick-me-up that you get delivered straight to your inbox each week.
"You can do hard things," I whispered to my wife as she battled through the intensity of contractions in the hospital. She looked back at me, squeezed my hands, and with unwavering strength, replied, "I can do hard things." These words have taken on a profound meaning in my life, especially as I begin navigating the intricate dance of being a creative and a father.
So far, parenthood has been a journey filled with its own unique challenges. When intertwined with the unpredictable life of a freelance designer, like myself, it can sometimes feel overwhelming. Yet, in those moments of doubt, I remind myself that I can do hard things. As I return to work, I know I’ll need to learn how to balance client demands with precious family time, meeting deadlines while tending to my son’s needs and being present for my wife—these are no small feats. But each day, I will choose to rise to the challenge, knowing that every effort is worth it.
In our creative world, we're often bombarded with advice that oversimplifies the path to success. The truth is, it's far from easy. Balancing our time, learning new skills, and handling rejection can be like climbing a steep mountain. But, I’m here to remind you that we can do hard things. Think back to those countless projects or personal creative endeavors you’ve embarked on, those moments when self-doubt cast its shadow, yet somehow, you ignited the fire within and pushed through.
Taking a leap of faith to pursue your dreams is hard, but you can do hard things.
Starting from scratch is hard, but you can do hard things.
Moving to a new city for new opportunities is hard, but you can do hard things.
Being an artist is hard, but you can do hard things.
Every piece of art we create, every new technique we master, and every critique or rejection we receive is a step on the journey of growth. These challenges are the chisels that sculpt us into better artists. Embracing the belief that we can do hard things empowers us to take risks and produce work that resonates deeply, like a melody that strikes a chord in the hearts of our audience.
As we continue on our creative journeys, let’s hold this powerful affirmation close. Whenever we face a tough project, a steep learning curve, or a moment of doubt, let’s remind ourselves: We can do hard things. Together, we can create beautiful inspiring art that bloom like a garden nurtured with care and love.
Remember this, you are capable.
Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. Not even yourself.
I joined Substack two months ago, I've read a lot of amazing things. But these 5 words have been the best so far. Thank you, and welcome to fatherhood.❤️
Had to take a minute to soak this in because although life is hard right now
